Spectacular Lightning (Aug 9)

Edmonton and region got demolished last night by an electrical storm that also brought loonie-sized hail, a month’s worth of rain in an hour, and severe flooding. I was lucky enough to capture these photos while being eaten alive by mosquitos on my condo’s balcony.

My second solo chase of my career… Well, the second chase that I’d consider to be a real, honest to goodness chase. I chased the second tornado warned storm of the day (and of course, missed the one that did drop a tornado. Boo!) and although it was rotating strongly at some points, it just never really got itself together.

Greensburg, KS

Greensburg, Kansas experienced a horrendous EF-5 tornado in 2007. It’s the strongest category tornado that exists, and it went through the town twice. Damage was awful, lives were lost. These photos were taken shortly after the storm went through. The town was devastated.

First Solo Chase

2008 marks the year that I spent a day storm chasing on my own. I had help from the wonderful Roger Hill with some nowcasts and target area pinpointing, but I was alone in the vehicle. It was a bit of a gong-show because I didn’t have any internet in the car, and finding internet outside the hotels took a lot of time that I should have been driving. Regardless, I saw a great storm (likely the best of the week) and some exciting stuff. Photo quality is not the greatest, but have a look anyway.
